We Have One Ghana! We Don't Want To Be Refugees!

Ms. Joyce Ohenewaa Kwapong advocating
for peace at St Thomas Aquinas SHS
WE HAVE ONE GHANA!! WE DON'T WANT TO BE REFUGEES!!

You and I may not know the value of peace until we have been handed guns to shoot our own mothers and fathers.
We may not know the worth of being peaceful until we see our young girls, our little sisters, the children of tomorrow, our future leaders, being "war raped" and forcefully impregnated, with Sexually Transmitted Diseases on the rampant and death tolls reaching a crescendo.
We may not know what peace really is, until we starve as food and thirst as water.
We may not see the need to be peaceful until an entire family who once had more than enough to eat and waste, can no more afford a cup of rice nor piece of bread to nibble.
Oh yes! Not until hunger becomes the children's bread and tears their water, we may not see the essence of being peaceful.

Today, we may overlook what it means to be a peaceful nation, because we may not have seen human arms being slain in the name of "short and long sleeves"
We may not value peace today because we have not experienced gruesome moments where individuals have to trample upon dead bodies of family members, as they flee for their dear lives.
We have never encountered the trauma underlying leaving one's place of abode to a lone man's land as refugees running from the rains of bullets and from the comfort of one's bed to live under tents.

Many countries, with the likes of Rwanda, South Sudan, Liberia, Somalia, Angola, Burundi, have had an eyesore encounter of war, deaths, destruction, disabilities, pollution, psychological stress related to war, to mention but few.
Team of speakers for the peace-advocacy
 campaign tour

These great countries were once as peaceful as Ghana, but today, they are being used as cautionary tales.
Why???
This question is left to you and I to answer.

If today, Ghana is enjoying peace and tranquility, we ought to see it as a privilege which we must fearfully and jealously protect.
We must task ourselves with the responsibility of maintaining the peace we have as a nation.
We must use our positive strengths to maintain the peace of our land than to spend it in salvaging the leftovers after the nation is plunged in war.
Let us not wait to ran out of our own land seeking for refuge, like animals being frightened and chased away whilst grazing on another man's land.

It is for the peace of this nation and the desire not to see Ghana encounter such atrocities, that a team of student leaders and activists have come together to go on a peace-advocacy campaign tour dubbed "The need for violent free election"

A campaign tour spearheaded by the Face of GUPS; Shemimah Dapilah and assisted by various student leaders and activists in the persons of Barrack Dodoo, E.K.D Oppong, Tunde Awosika, and myself, Joyce Ohenewaa Kwapong.

As an activist for women and children, I cannot keep silent but to advocate for the peace of Ghana because when a nation is "peace wrecked", women and children suffer most.
The peace of Ghana is my peace, your peace and the peace of generations unborn.

We have One Ghana! We don't want to be refugees!

Ghana needs peace and not to be left in pieces.

Be a peace magnet!
    Be an agent of peace!

Woman Of Valour

       LITTLE CHILDREN FOLLOW ME

Little Children Follow Me
A careful man I must be,
Little children follow me,
I do not dare go astray,
For they will go the self-same way
I cannot escape their watchful eye,
Whatever they see me do, they'll try.
Like me they say they're going to be,
Little children who follow me.
I must remember as I go,
Through summer suns and winter snows,
As I am building, for the years to be,
That little children follow me.
                                                           Unknown.

WOMAN OF VALOUR Inspires...

Little children are following you with their watchful eyes and you may be the only inspiration of one little child and of the younger generation as a whole.
See it as a responsibility to live a life worthy of emulation.
Your words, works, deeds, actions and inactions, they see and hear.
Do not let that child down.
Do not leave that child disappointed.
Let your light shine to impact them and also generations unborn.

THIS IS A POEM I DEDICATE TO ALL WOMEN AND CHILDREN.
YES IN LIFE, YOU MAY HAVE ENEMIES,
PEOPLE WHO MAY ENVY YOU
PEOPLE WHO MAY WANT TO BRING YOU DOWN
HOWEVER, LET YOUR SUCCESS STORY BE THE BEST REVENGE TOWARDS THEM.
BE INSPIRED BY MY POEM AS IT UNFOLDS....
WHEN YOUR ENEMIES COME AS A FLOOD,
THIS POEM SHOULD BE YOUR STORY....

MY ENEMIES! MY ELEVATORS!

They might have come into my life
To erase my footprints
But as they pursue me
The more I walk away from them
And make more footprints

They might have come to paralyze me
But they never realized that
They became my shoes
Ones that I wear so I can walk my journey
Through life's turmoil race

They might have come to drag me down
So I cant reach the top
But they end up being ladders
On which I climb to reach that great height in life

They might have come to afflict me
To wound me and to leave me with a nasty scar
But as I look pitifully at those scars
I remember an enemy caused it
And this makes me strive harder
To put that enemy to shame

They might have come into my life
So that my life becomes one that can never know joy
But as I imagine my future,
I see a bright rainbow
And my heart rejoices

They might have come to get me confused
So I wouldn't know my bearing in life
But they turn out to become my cardinal points
To direct me through life's journey

They came to destroy the seed that I am,
And to make me wither
But I ended up sprouting
And blossoming like a sweet scented flower

They came to torment
But ended up to correct

Once I called them ENEMIES
But now I call them ELEVATORS
My Enemies! My Elevators

THE REAL FAILURES TO GHANA

LAST STANZA

BY: Joyce Ohenewaa Kwapong

Cheap education!
No better than a school without accreditation
Our educational curriculum hardly being revised
Academic work and practical life issues on different spectrum
Thereby producing a mass number of uneducated literates
Each year, graduands walk majestically in their gowns
Along the aisle, they walk to receive their academic certificates
Certificates which do not truly reflect who they are and what they carry within themselves
After the celebration, the realities of life stare in their faces
Many join the unemployed train
Why? All because of CHEAP EDUCATION
EDUCATION has lost its BIRTHRIGHT to SCHOOLING
A wake up call to all students
Open your eyes and be vigilant!
Upon the completion of school does not make one educated
Let us arise and seek for education in our schools beyond mere schooling
Together, let us say NO to Cheap Education.

WORKS BEYOND WORDS

My life is my message.
I stand for women and children.
When a nation is peace wrecked, it is women and children that suffer the most.It is in this vein, that I cannot keep silent but move out of my comfort zone and beyond writing, to reach out to these youths from all walks of life, to mentor them on peace and educate them on reasons why they should not avail themselves to be manipulated and used as weapons of war during this 2016 elections in Ghana.

As part of the mentorship program, I took the children through the documentary "PRAY THE DEVIL BACK TO HELL" which talks about the Liberian war, how boys were given guns to kill their mothers and fathers, girls were being raped, families could not even afford a cup of rice and the many other atrocities related to war. This was to

give the youths a more picturesque view of what war entails and what it means to enjoy National Peace.

Our lives begin to end the day that we remain silent about the things that matter.
A lot of things indeed matter in this life and our lives begin to end the day we remain silent about them.
Beyond the peace talks with the youths, we had other fruitful discussions such as issues affecting women and children, youth in community development, leadership, coping with decision making, our impact on the environment, wisdom of the elderly and also, we engaged in other projects such as tree planting, clean up, flood
mitigation, amongst many others.

All of these great and wonderful activities happened during Peace Jam Ghana Youth Conference 2016 organized by West Africa Center For Peace Foundation, where we had with us the 2011 Noble Peace Laureate Madam Leymah Gbowee gracing the occasion and sharing so much with us concerning peace.

After this great conference, I felt fulfilled because of the opportunity to impact lives, of which I believe that my life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives and humanity.
Reaching out to the children through mentorship and taking part in active educative games and projects brought nothing but joy and happiness to my heart.
I also had the opportunity to advocate for peace on HB Connet Live, of which i gladly did because the peace of Ghana is my peace, and the peace of all women and children.

During the conference, I did not only go and deliver what I have for these youths, but I also availed myself to learn from them. It was great, having learn a lot from these youths of which i will share something brief, a young girl of Junior High School level shared concerning youths and sexuality...

And it reads,

In life, everyone wants the best. Students want grade A in exams and not a grade C.
But in our sexual life, despite how unprepared the youths may be, they don't want the best which is the A (ABSTINENCE) rather, they prefer the C (CONTRACEPTIVES AND CONDOM USE)
She concluded by advising all youths to always go in for the best which is A (ABSTINENCE) and not the C.

It was awesome and memorable, moving beyond WORDS to WORKS to impact lives.

My life is my message.
I believe in WORKS beyond WORDS.
I believe in walking my talks.
I believe in emptying myself for humanity.
I stand for all women and children.

WOMAN OF VALOUR CANNOT KEEP SILENT ON THIS ISSUE...

WOMAN OF VALOUR CANNOT KEEP SILENT ON THE ATTACK OF EC BOSS BY MP OF ASSIN NORTH

To be a woman of VALOUR characterizes you as someone who would rather die of passion than of silence, because our lives as humans begin to end the very day we become silent about the things that matter.
It is in this vein that as an activist for women and children, I vehemently condemn the attack made on the EC chairperson, Madam Charlotte  by 'Hon.' Kennedy Agyapong, MP of Assin North.

I position myself objectively, without any partisan influence whatsoever, to express how saddened I am as a woman who has the desire to see women occupy respectable positions in society being verbally attacked on regular basis.

It saddens my heart not only because it was an attack on a woman who had to brave all odds to be an accomplished woman of our era but because this attack goes a long way to affect all women in general.

Such an attack, worsens the stereotype that women who have climbed to a certain leadership apex in society get there through the exchange of their bodies and self worth for cheap favour.

Such an attack as made by the MP, kills the drive and spirit of women who strive to accomplish great feats in society with the fear of facing similar unwarranted public ridicule.

More so, it saddens my heart to hear such utterances come from a respectable man occupying a major position in public office and serving as a role model to younger generations and to some student parliamentarians across the nation.

This unfortunate incident becomes more shameful when citizens and youths especially, politicize such action, seeing nothing wrong with such utterances as made, pledging allegiance to political caucus over country and people's integrity.
It is about time as youths, we rise up and stand for integrity beyond political affiliation. Wrong is wrong and must not be justified in any way whatsoever.
Our nation will be treading on a calamituous path if as a nation, we condone such utterances without nipping it at the bud.

There has been prolonged cries of gender equity by many activists, women movements, associations and other bodies, for women to boldly lead, take up mantles and occupy sensitive positions in society.
Then the unfortunate keeps occurring on regular basis, where personalities of women occupying such portfolios are attacked and abused verbally, hindering the vision of other women who aspire to occupy similar positions as their female counterparts who have taken the lead.

An Akan adage goes, "even the teeth and tongue sometimes do have disagreements and fight". This tells us that, disagreements are inevitable and it is not out of place for two individuals or personalities to have disagreements. However, it is the process of resolving the disagreement that matters most.

If this honorable MP, who serves as a role model to many young ones has any disagreements with the EC chair, was the honorable thing not to apply legal procedures or other peaceful ways of resolving their differences and not to attack her personality, disgracing womanhood?

Ghanaians must bear in mind that, this unfortunate recent saga has hit international spotlight and it will be shameful and also, leave a terrible dent on the parliamentary body of Ghana if the issue is not resolved and the MP placed to order according to appropriate procedures.
The nature of Ghanainan politics is becoming dirtier each day and appropriate measures must be put in place to salvage the situation.

I respectfully ask that the MP renders an unqualified apology to the EC boss and to all women at large for such disgrace mounted on us.
