The Real Failures To Ghana Stanza 3

THE REAL FAILURES TO GHANA

By: Joyce Ohenewaa Kwapong

STANZA 3:

Cheap Journalism! Overrun with
 mediocrity

Information embellished with falsehood on front pages

LIES! Published as headlines

Our nation, Ghana! Devoid of objective journalism

Responsible journalism gone missing

The media supposing to be candles

That illuminate our country

Has turned out to be thick ugly darkness

Plunging the good people of the Nation in dark lies

Journalists committed to getting it first

Without interest in getting it right

Less investigation,Quick reporting; their focus

Journalism standards gone so low

Forums for discussion of National issues

Have become a platform for insults and ridicule

Cheap Journalism! A real failure to Ghana

Cheap Journalism we must all avoid

LAST STANZA unfolds....

ELECTION Does Not Mean VIOLENCE

ELECTION Does Not Mean VIOLENCE!

22nd June, 2016

"Peace is a journey of 1000 miles and it must be taken one step at a time" as Lyndon B. Johnson aptly puts it.

This year 2016 creates an atmosphere where Ghanaians will be in a position to take a step of an election journey.

The most pertinent question is not "Who will win the election" but "Will our nation get peace-wrecked after we have fulfilled our constitutional rights of going to the polls?"

This article is not to criticize aspiring leaders or politicians, neither is it written on partisan basis but to advocate for peace during this election season.
Let us all unite and advocate for peace beyond our individualistic concerns and political affiliations. The peace of Ghana is my peace, your peace and the peace of generations unborn.

Great leaders who have departed from us were hungry not for power, but for peace.
Nelson Mandela made it clear when he made this statement,

"I dream of an Africa which is in peace with itself. "

So if I may ask our current generation, What is your dream for Ghana and Africa?
As a political aspirant, What is your dream?
As a citizen, What is your dream?
Is your dream that which is backed by selfish motives? Limited to caucus interest?
Politician, to gain power and amass wealth?
To siphon the nation's resources all to yourself?
Is that all your dream?

People, let us look beyond mere power, for

"When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace" Jimi Hendrise.

Jean-Bertrand Aristide once said,
"We must all make peace so that we can all live in peace"

A youth activist, E.K.D. Oppong passionately expressed "Peace remains a national asset of every democratic state; it is prudent thereof as youths of this country we avail ourselves to live and advocate for peace, before, during and after elections"

All citizens, young and old, strong and weak, must make efforts to promote peace and not engage in any sinister activity that will spearhead riot during this election period.

"It is not enough to say we must not wage war. It is necessary we must not wage war. It is necessary to love peace and SACRIFICE for it."

In our actions and inactions, we must sacrifice for peace.
Some utterances must be forcefully and diplomatically swallowed as you and I, as our sacrifice for peace.
Angry fists and fingers must be calmly put at our backs for the power of the thumb to decide.
Machetes, cutlasses, knives, instruments of violence and war, as well as blood spilling objects must be peacefully laid down as our sacrifice for peace.

Women in Ghana must arise, brave all odds and come to the realization that they have proactive and active roles to play in this election period.

The political climate is getting tensed each day and women must make their voices heard rather than being passive observers; for when a nation is denied of its peace, they become the most vulnerable victims.
Women are known to be good talkers and this is the time to capitalize on their talking abilities and strength to advocate for peace and also, uniting to form peace coalitions so as to achieve a common purpose; which is the peace of Ghana and Africa.

History can take us back to trace the various roles women played in their societies to ensure peace, with the likes of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee, Betty Friedan, Maya Angelou...

Mother Theresa, a woman of great influence asserted,

"If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten we belong to each other"

Truly, if we lose sight of the fact that we are one people and we belong to each other, then we will begin to wage war against ourselves.
If as a nation, we are well-lived by this quote of Mother Theresa, peace will be the nation's bread.

It takes years to build but it can take a day or less to destroy.
In casting our individual votes, let us remain as one people, neutral on the outside, allowing our political affiliation to be deep seated within us, tolerating the opinions of each political party and eschewing all forms of bickering and derogatory comments that could jeopardize the peace and tranquility of the country.

As Ghanaians, peace has been our national heritage, which we must be proud of and protect fearfully with all diligence.

National interests of political stability and peace should be our responsibilities as youths during this electioneering year. We must be an active force championing Peace, advocating for voilent-free processes rather than muting our right conscience of nationalism to "die" for partisan interests. Its a call of duty, and we must arise as youths of Ghana to defend our democratic integrity.

I entreat and encourage our youths, especially the educated elites; greatly influencing societies to avail themselves actively to promote peace-talks or campaigns within their respective societies. A stable political environment before, during and after elections is a national treasure we must protect and defend in one spirit--Nationalism!

Our aspiring leaders and politicians must realize that they are the vehicles through which our dreams of having a peaceful election are translated to reality.
They must play politics with conscience and have in mind that election into power is not a "do or die" affair which should make them hungry for power to the detriment of human lives and property.

The Electoral Commission, the body that controls all facets of our elections must ensure that their conducts in discharging their duties of accountability are fair and just.

"The effective and fervent prayers of a righteous man availeth much" the Christian Bible preaches

Quran 2:110 teaches " And be steadfast in prayer and whatever good ye send forth for your souls before you, ye shall find it with Allah. For Allah sees well all that ye do"

With the teachings in Christianity and Islam concerning prayer, I thereby plead with all Ghanaians that whenever they say a prayer, they should pray for the peace of our beloved country.

It is my devout hope, as the hope of many others, to observe a peaceful, violent-free election.
Together, let us stay peaceful in the upcoming elections; for peace blossoms, peace spreads, peace illuminates and peace fulfills.

Ghana needs peace and not to be left in pieces.

THE REAL FAILURES TO GHANA STANZA 2

THE REAL FAILURES TO GHANA

By: Joyce Ohenewaa Kwapong

STANZA TWO:

Cheap Preaching!!
"Ministers of the Gospel"
A charge to keep you have
Yet,
Manipulating congregants
Consulting other powers to gain fame
And attract crowd
Having various titles, as lengthy as rails
Written boldly on foreheads of undeserving ones
Tarnishing the image of those who bear good fruits
Making the harvests of such ones seem unwholesome
"Scoundrels" humiliating congregants
Causing family disintegration

A gargantuan audience
Hiding under the name of "dedicated Christians"
Spending productive man hours
Loitering around church grounds
Forgetting that there is time for everything
And that God does not give riches
But the ability to make riches
And when they end up in the gutter,
They attribute their failures and mishaps to the innocent GREY- HAIRED ones

Congregants have made themselves sheep
To be eaten by wolves
The scourge of stifled development
The Nation's mystery of failure
Cheap preaching!! A real failure to Ghana.

FGM

SAVE THE UNBORN AND THE GIRLS OF TODAY- END FGM.

By: Joyce Ohenewaa Kwapong

3rd May, 2016

Can you as an individual, imagine the pain of a blade cutting your fingers whilst trimming your nails? Or the pain of razor cuts? How about the cut of a knife on your finger?
Tell me a bit more about the prick of a needle on your finger tips.
I want to know much more about a cut on your toe after a stumble or fall?
These circumstances are not moments of joy but pain, I suppose.
So why then would a young girl be subjected to the use of a razor, go through a painful process whereby her labia minora or majora is cut off, a practice referred to as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)?

FGM is a painful process whereby the young girls female genitalia is cut off with a razor blade. In certain societies, this act is done using a rusty can lid, glass fragment, special knives, scissors or scalpels.
What moments of pain, where these young girls are made to lie helplessly to undergo such cruel act which has no medical basis.

Some societies may have several reasons why they practice FGM. Such reasons may include psychosexual reasons; where FGM is carried out as a way to control a woman's sexuality.
Other reasons could be cultural; where this practice is seen as a part of a girl's initiation into womanhood, thus deemed as part of a community's cultural heritage. Certain societies also base FGM practice on hygienic reasons where the female genitalia is considered dirty and ugly, hence the need to be removed to promote hygiene.
Whereas, other communities argue on religious basis by justifying the practice with religious doctrine. FGM practice in other societies, is a pre requisite for marriage.

However, the question is, are these justifications solid enough to outweigh the repercussions of this practice?

Permit me to outline a few negative implication of this practice which I believe will sensitize your emotions to say NO to FGM.

This article does not seek to only safeguard "at-risk" young girls of our current generation but to transcend to future generations of young girls and spare them the pain, ordeal and dangers of this practice.
The future of the upcoming generation lies in our hands and we must not fail them.
Together, let us arise and speak for their future.
Let us say NO to FGM.

Victims of FGM undergo immediate and subsequent complications which include infections, hemorrhage and physical trauma.
Subsequently, most of these young girls join their ancestors prematurely whilst the few others brave all odds to survive, going through psychological and emotional trauma such as depression, anxiety, shock, amongst others.

FGM is usually practiced on young girls who are not yet of age to stand their grounds and take personal decisions regarding issues of their sexual life.
Between the ages of infancy, and 15 years, as innocent, naïve and vulnerable as these girls are, they are manipulated and made to suffer in silence this barbaric act.

Every life is entitled to certain basic human rights.
Likewise, every child has the right to be protected from harm.
With the practice of FGM, can we then conclude, that society over the years, has failed to play it's role towards ensuring that our young girls are protected?

FGM is an abuse of the child's right  and should we watch unconcerned whilst the rights of our young girls being violated?
Would we turn a blind eye and deaf ears to the plight of these young girls, when they are entitled to freedom from violence and torture?

The practice of FGM is a threat to achieving the Millennium  Development Goals which includes reduction of child and maternal mortality, as well as the combat of HIV / AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
Statistics by international organizations such as WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, World Bank, to mention but few, have it that most countries where FGM is prevalent, have high records of maternal mortality.
Medical research also has it that, the practice of FGM increases the risks of HIV/ AIDS transmission to young girls and women.

Some societies argue that, FGM is a cultural heritage which they owe conformity to. For this reason, it becomes a herculean task to end this abuse.
Cultural heritage as they say? Culture I know is dynamic and subject to change.
When culture poses a hazard to humanity, it should be written off rather than used as a stepping stone in commiting violence and abuse.

A pertinent question concerning FGM as a cultural heritage is that, did man make culture, or culture made man?? If it's the former, then I stand to say that, culture that impacts negatively on human lives should be abolished.

As rightly said by Nimko Ali,

"Forget culture, forget community, and think about the child."

Other cultures argue FGM as a way of controlling a woman's sexuality.
For this reason, they cut the most sensitive part of a woman's genital organ.
If FGM practice, reduces a woman's urge for sexual pleasure, then how about the few who get sexually aroused by a mere touch or body contact with the opposite sex?
Is the female genital organ the only part of a woman that can feel pleasure?
Why not cut off the breasts, thighs and somewhat ridiculous, the ears of those who have such body parts as their most sensitive?

It is about time society gets rid of the outdated and pre colonial way of thinking and instead, strategize constructive measures for promoting chastity amongst young girls.

Society should consider mounting platforms that will educate young girls on the realities of their sexual lives and actions, abstinence, gender based violence and other sex educative and women empowerment programs.

More so, society must focus on the prevention of FGM and reduction of its practice to a zero- incidence rate rather than prosecution of culprits.
An anonymous quote reads,

"Behind every prosecution of an FGM perpetrator is a child that has been failed."

Using this platform, I say Congratulations! Kudos to all tribes, ethnic groups and countries that have outlawed this practice and abandoned it as inhumane. To the few that haven't and are still practicing FGM, I plead your indulgence to say NO to FGM.

The blood of innocent young girls are crying out loud for an end of FGM.
This should serve as a wake up call and challenge all tribes, ethnic groups and countries to mobilize forces and in one voice, Say NO to abuse, NO to harm of young females and NO to FGM..!

We must avail ourselves, beyond our individualistic concerns, championing the good course of improving lives in our societies, countries and Continent at large.

Horace Mann rightly said,

"Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity".

What are we doing for our young girls who are consistently being subjected to pains, harm, infections and in some cases, death? We must be the voice of these young ones, and stand united, call on our respective national leaders, if the need be, enact and enforce laws to abolish this barbaric acts in societies.

"The most persistent and consistent question is 'what are we doing for others?'"-Martin Luther King Jr.

We have a duty to these younger ones, and the unborn generations; responsibilities we should be honoured to perform. We are the progressive change we seek and we must lead the change.

"If not us, who? And If not now, when?"

the love of a mother

THE LOVE OF A MOTHER; A BEACON OF CARE!

By: Joyce Ohenewaa Kwapong

She endured to have you...

Take me to where it all began mother,
When the sound of my cry was announced to the whole world
And the joyful sounds from loved ones tickled in my ears

Take me to where it all began
When your life was wandering on the path of life and death

Mother, take me to where it all began
When your life hanged on helplessly
Like a needy woman's thin thread

I cry out mother,
Take me to where it all began
When food tasted like a bitter pill to swallow and water like urine

Mother! once more,
Take me to where it all began
When you traveled in and out of the hospital
Like a tourist, captivated by the sight of a site

You remember, mother?
When the gloom of your life gave way to a wonderful time?
As you brought into this world a life from within you

And myself, I remember
Oh yes down memory lane
When you would starve to feed me
When you would sell
To give me education

You believed,
If you educate a woman,
You educate a nation

You have always been there for me
You give me support when I'm falling
A shoulder to cry on when I'm teary
A wide spread arm when I'm lonely
Strength when I'm weak
And love even when I cause you pain

Yet, you never forgot what a great man once said

A gem cannot be polished without friction
Nor a man perfected without trials

That remained your philosophy

So when I erred, you corrected me
And placed me on a smooth path
A path that will not one day lead to my doom

When my heart seems wounded by your correction
It is never healed by hatred
But only healed with your love

You forgive whatever needs forgiving
And help with whatever I need help with

I can never thank you enough mother

A mother who endured the excruciating pain of labor
Only to give me life she was unsure of

My thanks today goes out to you mother
One who availed herself to be a playground for the gynecologists tools

A mother who keeps her words and promises
One who brightens up my world when it's dark and empty

You may have your own imperfections
But in my eyes you're a mother of perfection

I may have wronged you
And I may wrong you in times to come
I have never want to see you hurt
But to err is human

Please forgive me
And remember the love you always had for me
From pregnancy
To delivery
To my upbringing
Let that flame of love never die out
Let love continue to be our hallmark

Out of my heart mother,
Take this love

Out of my love, take my appreciation

Take this SALUTE

Because I have tried to understand the hearts of some women
And realized
Not all women are mothers

Today, I make this assertion
And plead the world
To say ayekoo mum
Merci beaucoup ma mèrè
Because you are a precious mother indeed

Happy Mother's Day To All Mothers!
God Bless Our Faithful Mothers!
God Bless Our Responsible Mothers!

Long Live Mother Ghana!
Long Live Mother Africa!

THE REAL FAILURES TO GHANA STANZA 1

THE REAL FAILURES TO GHANA

 By: Joyce Ohenewaa Kwapong

 STANZA ONE:

Through all the years
Full of rampant C's have we lived
What more could they represent?
If not
cheap politics, cheap preaching, cheap journalism, cheap education
Look all eyes properly fixed in their sockets
Look at them with disdain
What an eyesore!
Indeed the largest scale on earth
Would not be able to measure
All these acts of treachery
Towards our prestigious country
Exquisite fruits of incessant lies and failures abound in our Nation's vineyard
Tendered with villianity and duplicity

Cheap politics!
Cheap Politics! I say LOUD and CLEAR
Politicians with honey coated tonguesWho muffle their words
Causing one to borrow a magic wand from the wizard of Oz's bag of tricks to understand
Making empty and deceitful promises in their manifestos
Which were meant to be told to the marines
Lulling the citizens to case their votes in favor of them
Exchanging currencies with human conscience
Leaving their people plunged in poverty
No jobs and no favorable climate to create one
Young ladies going for "skirt employment"
Young men resorting to fraud, arms and weapons
Whilst politicians focus on wealth creation in government

Politicians! A charge to keep you have
But many seem to have forgotten
And so,
Play politics without principle
Where is thy loyalty to country?
" I promise on my honor"
" To be faithful and loyal to Ghana my motherland"
Recited as a formality in the days of their youth
So positions are occupied
With loyalty to corruption and deceitfulness
Rather than loyalty to country
National wealth and resources in wrong hands
Whilst good people suffer
Cheap politics!!!!!!
A real failure to Ghana

The Eagle wings and not Chicken feet of a woman

THE EAGLE WINGS AND NOT CHICKEN FEET OF A WOMAN

Woman, you have been given eagle wings and not chicken feet..To be a high flier,  to rise, soar and reach greater heights.

The eagle has no fear of adversity.
They have a fearless spirit of a conqueror
Stand for who you are, woman
If not, you will fall for anything

Woman, there's an eagle in you that wants to soar.
Don't quack like a duck
Soar like that eagle
Make your voice heard And your presence felt
Fearlessly, stand for change
Stand for peace
Stand for fairness
Make a difference in the world
Touch lives
And inspire nations

Believe you can, and you are half way there

Woman, sacrifice your today so that your children can have a better tomorrow

Heavy hearts, like heavy clouds in the sky,are best relieved by the letting of a little water.

So cry when the need may be, woman
Your tears are not your weakness
Neither does it demonstrate your weakness

Let your cry be a cry for peace
A cry for justice and fairness
A cry for positive change

The rose and the thorn, and the sorrow and gladness are linked together.
So persevere when the going gets tough

Water the thorns because of the roses
And soon the beautiful rose flower
Will blossom your success and victory

You have eagles wings and not chicken feet
Rise, soar and bring out the strength of womanhood in you

Yes you can!!
